The temporary shutdown is slated to last between 30 and 45 days, with the department expecting everything to be back in its proper place by December 13. While the doors may be closed for construction, officials are quick to reassure the public that these renovations won’t slow down their reaction time when seconds count.

To keep the city safe, crews and their gear have been spread out among several partner facilities nearby. This strategic shuffle ensures that there isn’t a gap in coverage anywhere in town. According to Jason Ball of Staunton Fire and Rescue, part of the fleet has moved over to the rescue squad building on Coulter Street, while the ladder truck has found a temporary home at Station 10, located right in front of Walmart.

Ball credited the seamless transition to strong working relationships with neighboring agencies who stepped up to share their workspace. He emphasized that residents should expect the same level of protection they always receive, noting that there will be absolutely no reduction in services while the work continues.

Ultimately, the project is about modernization. By updating the aging interiors of Station 1, the department aims to create a more efficient environment for its first responders without hindering their current ability to answer calls across the community. Once the dust settles in mid December, firefighters look forward to returning to a refreshed headquarters.

Staunton Fire and Rescue is shaking things up for a few weeks as they move operations out of Station 1 to make room for some much needed interior updates.
